Why do your fingers wrinkle in water?

The Science
The giveaway is that nerve damage stops it. If wrinkling were just water soaking in, a numb finger would still prune. It doesn’t. That tells us the brain and nerves are driving it.
Here’s the mechanism: prolonged water contact triggers your autonomic nervous system — the automatic, behind-the-scenes control system — to constrict the tiny blood vessels just under the skin of your fingers and toes. As those vessels narrow, the volume beneath the skin drops, and the skin above puckers into ridges, like a tarp sagging when you let air out underneath it.
Why would evolution build that? The leading idea is grip. The wrinkle pattern isn’t random — it forms channels, like the tread on a rain tire, that let water drain out from between your fingertip and whatever you’re holding. Experiments have found people handle wet objects a little faster with wrinkled fingers than with smooth ones.
There’s a telling detail in that channel pattern: it’s remarkably consistent. If you wrinkle the same finger twice, the ridges and valleys form in the same places each time, because they trace the fixed layout of the blood vessels underneath. That’s more evidence this is structured plumbing at work, not skin randomly swelling.
The response is also tuned to the situation. Fingers wrinkle in plain water but barely react to very salty water, likely because the nervous system is reading the chemistry of what your skin is soaking in. And it isn’t instant — it takes several minutes of soaking to develop, roughly the timescale where better grip on wet things would actually start to matter.
