Why does cold weather make you pee more?

The Hook

Step out into the cold and suddenly you need a bathroom. It has a name — cold diuresis — and it starts not in your bladder but in your blood vessels, which clamp down the moment the temperature drops.

The Science

When you get cold, your body’s first priority is protecting your core temperature. To keep warm blood away from the chilly surface, it constricts the blood vessels in your skin and limbs — that’s why your fingers go pale and cold.

But squeezing all those vessels shrinks the space your blood has to fill. With the same amount of blood in a smaller “container,” your central blood pressure rises. Your body reads that as too much fluid in the system.

Your kidneys are the pressure-relief valve. To bring pressure back down, they pull more water out of the blood and send it to the bladder — the fastest way to shed volume is to make urine. So the cold indirectly tells your kidneys to offload fluid, and you feel the urge to go.

Hormones probably nudge it along too, though the details are still debated. Normally a hormone called antidiuretic hormone (ADH, or vasopressin) tells your kidneys to hold onto water, and a long-standing idea is that the rise in central pressure suppresses ADH so the kidneys stop being told to conserve. But that ADH explanation is contested — some researchers doubt it’s the main driver. A better-supported player is atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), a hormone the heart releases when its chambers sense the extra fluid; ANP directly tells the kidneys to shed salt and water. Several signals seem to push the same way, and the urge arrives fast.

Your kidneys are built for exactly this kind of fine-tuning. Every day they filter roughly 180 liters of fluid and reabsorb almost all of it, deciding moment to moment how much to keep and how much to release. Cold weather just tilts that balance toward “release.”
