Could your stomach acid dissolve a razor blade?

The Hook

Your stomach makes hydrochloric acid — the same acid used in industry to clean metal. It’s potent enough that, given time, it can corrode a swallowed metal object. Which raises a better question than “how strong is it?”: why doesn’t it eat your own stomach?

The Science

Cells in your stomach lining pump out hydrochloric acid (HCl), driving the stomach’s contents to a pH of roughly 1.5 to 3.5 — acidic enough to break down tough proteins and kill most swallowed bacteria. Studies of swallowed objects have found that thin metal can indeed be significantly corroded by prolonged exposure to stomach acid.

So why is the stomach fine? Because it’s armored. The lining secretes a thick layer of mucus and bicarbonate (a base) that clings to the wall, neutralizing acid right at the surface and keeping the corrosive fluid a safe distance from living cells. On top of that, the lining replaces its cells extremely fast, shedding and rebuilding constantly so damage never accumulates.

When that defense fails — say, a bacterium called H. pylori or heavy painkiller use weakens the mucus — the acid reaches the wall and burns it. That’s an ulcer.

The acid isn’t just for defense — it’s a key first step in digestion. Its low pH activates an enzyme called pepsin, which starts chopping proteins into smaller pieces, and it unfolds tightly wound proteins so that enzymes can get at them. The acid also helps your body absorb certain nutrients, including iron and vitamin B12, which is why long-term acid-lowering can occasionally affect those levels.

Your stomach doesn’t keep this acid on all the time. Production ramps up when you eat — triggered by the sight and smell of food, by the stomach stretching, and by a hormone called gastrin — and quiets down between meals, so the lining isn’t fighting a full-strength bath around the clock.

  • The cells that make acid, called parietal cells, don’t store it pre-made; they assemble hydrochloric acid on demand by pumping hydrogen and chloride separately into the stomach.

Why It Matters

The stomach is a lesson in controlled danger: your body deliberately makes something corrosive and then out-engineers it with a mucus shield and rapid repair. Ulcers, heartburn, and acid reflux are all what happens when that careful containment springs a leak — and understanding the balance is exactly why the common heartburn drugs work by turning the acid down, not off.
