How does a cut heal?

The Hook

A cut looks like a simple gap that closes over. Underneath, your body is running a precise, overlapping four-stage repair project — and it keeps working for weeks after the surface has sealed.

The Science

Stage 1 — Stop the bleeding (hemostasis). Within seconds, blood vessels tighten and platelets rush in, sticking together and triggering a cascade that weaves a mesh of fibrin. That’s a clot, and dried on the surface, it’s a scab — a temporary seal.

Stage 2 — Clean up (inflammation). Immune cells flood the site to kill bacteria and clear debris. This is the redness, warmth, and swelling of a fresh wound — not infection, but the cleanup crew at work.

Stage 3 — Rebuild (proliferation). New tissue grows in. Cells lay down collagen scaffolding, tiny new blood vessels sprout to feed it, and fresh skin cells creep across the gap from the edges until they meet and close it.

Stage 4 — Remodel. Over weeks to months, that hasty patch is reorganized and strengthened, the collagen re-aligned. A scar is this final tissue — functional, but never quite as flexible or complete as the original, because the rebuild prioritizes speed over perfection.

These four stages overlap rather than running one at a time — cleanup is still finishing while rebuilding has already begun — and they’re coordinated by chemical signals called growth factors that cells release to tell their neighbors what to do next. That signaling is why timing matters so much: if the wound gets stuck in the inflammation stage, unable to move on to rebuilding, it becomes a chronic wound that won’t close.

A scar also tells you what got damaged. Skin’s outer layer, the epidermis, can regenerate cleanly, which is why a shallow scrape heals without a mark. A scar forms only when the cut reaches the deeper dermis, where the body can’t perfectly recreate the original weave of collagen and instead lays it down in denser, more uniform bundles — strong, but visibly different from the skin around it.

  • Scar tissue never grows back hair follicles, sweat glands, or the original collagen pattern, which is why a scar looks and feels different and doesn’t tan the same way.
  • Fully healed scar tissue tops out at roughly 80% of the original skin’s strength — the repair is durable but never quite as tough as what it replaced.
  • A developing fetus can heal certain wounds without any scar at all, and figuring out how it pulls that off is an active goal of regenerative-medicine research.

Why It Matters

Knowing the stages explains a lot: why picking a scab reopens the cleanup phase and invites infection, why good blood supply and nutrition speed healing, and why conditions like diabetes — which starve wounds of blood and immune support — can stall the whole project and turn a small cut into a serious problem.
